Bacteria Beyond Borders | 2026 Update

At Bacteria Beyond Borders, we want to take a moment to share what we’ve been working on—and why our mission feels more urgent than ever.

Over the past year, we have been involved in multiple complex, ongoing cases. These are not simple situations. The individuals coming to us have often been battling chronic health conditions for years—only to find that their cases have grown increasingly complicated over time. Many are facing overlapping diagnoses, underlying conditions, and a level of medical complexity that challenges even the most experienced specialists.

What we are seeing again and again is this: infection is where these stories begin.

In many of these cases, a bacterial, fungal, or polymicrobial infection was the initial trigger—setting off a chain reaction within the body. Over time, what may have started as a localized or acute infection evolves into something far more complex, impacting immune function, inflammation, and multiple systems throughout the body.

One thing has become abundantly clear: infection does not exist in isolation. Bacteria do not recognize borders—within the body or across the world. Once introduced, they can influence far more than a single site, contributing to chronic symptoms, systemic imbalance, and conditions that are often misunderstood or misattributed.

We are seeing firsthand that even physicians who specialize in infectious diseases and chronic conditions are struggling to find clear solutions for these patients. Many of these individuals have already seen multiple specialists, undergone countless tests, and still walk away without answers. In 2026, that reality is simply not acceptable.

These patients are not just dealing with physical illness—they are losing hope. Many feel dismissed, unheard, and alone. Their conditions impact every aspect of their lives, including their relationships, their ability to work, and their mental well-being. Some are even losing connections with family and friends who cannot fully understand the depth of what they’re experiencing.

We believe it’s time for a shift.

No single discipline has all the answers. To truly move forward, we must expand beyond traditional silos and bring together clinical research, conventional medicine, functional medicine, and pharmacists. Collaboration—not division—will lead to progress. Keeping an open mind and working together is how we begin to uncover real solutions for those who need them most.

We also recognize that many of these cases involve deeper, systemic challenges. Patients may be immunocompromised, dealing with autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, metabolic dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, or long-term inflammation within the body. In many instances, these downstream effects are influenced—or even driven—by unresolved or persistent infection.

That is why advanced testing matters. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) can play an important role in identifying the cause of infection by helping detect bacterial, fungal, and polymicrobial organisms that may not always be captured through traditional methods. When we better understand what is driving the infection, we are better positioned to create a more targeted and effective plan.

Healing, in these situations, must go beyond symptom management. It requires a whole-body approach—one that addresses both the infection itself and the environment within the body that allows it to persist.

That means looking at the full picture, including:

  • Nutrition and how food choices support healing and resilience
  • Sleep and the body’s ability to repair, regulate, and recover
  • Stress reduction and the impact of nervous system balance on immune function
  • Exercise and movement as tools for circulation, strength, and recovery
  • Correcting nutrient deficiencies that may be slowing progress or worsening symptoms
  • Reducing environmental exposures that can burden the body and interfere with healing
  • Immune support tailored to the individual’s needs and condition
  • Hormone and metabolic health as key drivers of energy, inflammation, and recovery
  • Targeted supplements used thoughtfully and strategically
  • Personal testing to better understand what is happening inside each unique body

We continue to explore emerging areas that may play a role in recovery, including:

  • The impact of the gut microbiome on overall health
  • The role of circulation in delivering healing throughout the body
  • The potential of peptides and other evolving therapies
  • The potential of phage therapy as a targeted approach for select bacterial infections, especially in cases involving resistant or difficult-to-treat organisms
  • The importance of mental resilience and a positive outlook in healing

In addition, specialty compounding pharmacies may be able to prepare custom topical prescriptions based on NGS results, offering a more targeted approach to infection management. In some cases, this may help address the infection more directly while also helping preserve the gut microbiome by reducing unnecessary systemic exposure. This kind of individualized care may open the door to more precise, thoughtful treatment strategies.

The human body is incredibly powerful. Given the right tools and support, it has the ability to heal. But we must ask the hard questions: Where do we begin? What is the right duration? What combination of therapies leads to lasting change?

At Bacteria Beyond Borders, we are committed to being part of the solution—but we cannot do it alone. This is a call to clinicians, researchers, pharmacists, and advocates across all disciplines around the world:

Let’s come together. Let’s share ideas. Let’s challenge assumptions. Let’s find answers.

If you have insights, experience, or perspectives that could help advance this mission, we want to hear from you!

Because no one should feel like they have nowhere left to turn.

Together, we can—and must—do better.
